How to Specify Machining Allowance for Titanium Forgings

2026-08-10

Machining allowance is the controlled material envelope left above the finished component. Too little stock can prevent full cleanup; excessive stock increases material use, machining time and cost.

Information Needed

  • Finished drawing and revision
  • Forging or rough-machined stock dimensions
  • Datum and concentricity requirements
  • Allowance on each functional surface
  • Draft, corner radius and flash-removal condition
  • Heat treatment, scale removal and surface condition
  • Dimensional inspection and NDT stage

Allowance Is Not a Single Universal Number

Required stock depends on forging size, geometry, process capability, distortion, heat treatment, surface removal and final tolerance. The purchaser and forger should agree the stock envelope and measurement method before production.

Rings and Sleeves Need Bore Control

For hollow parts, define both outside and inside machining allowance, bore eccentricity, wall variation, end faces and length. A nominal OD and ID alone may not establish enough stock across the complete component.

Inspection Sequence

Identify whether ultrasonic or surface examination applies before machining, after rough machining or at the finished stage. Removing stock can change the test surface and accessible volume.
