Precautions for titanium metal welding operations.
Titanium welding requires a qualified procedure that controls cleanliness, fit-up, heat input and inert-gas shielding of the molten weld, heat-affected zone and root. Universal limits for wind, humidity, ambient temperature or repair count should not be copied into every job; use the applicable code, project specification and qualified WPS.
Before Welding
- Confirm base-metal grade, filler classification, joint drawing and WPS revision.
- Remove oil, moisture, oxide and embedded iron using an approved cleaning method and dedicated tools.
- Verify fit-up, tack welds, root opening and purge arrangement.
- Check shielding-gas purity, flow and coverage using the qualified procedure.
During and After Welding

When Outdoor Welding Should Stop
Stop when wind, precipitation, condensation, temperature or contamination prevents the qualified procedure from maintaining joint cleanliness and shielding. Screens, enclosures or controlled heating may be permitted when the project procedure authorizes them. A single wind-speed or humidity number is not universally valid for all processes and codes.
Required Records
Retain material identity, WPS/PQR, welder qualification, filler batch, purge and gas controls where required, visual/NDE results and repair records. Pressure-system acceptance belongs to the completed joint and governing code, not to the titanium grade alone.
