Titanium Machining Tolerances, Surface Finish and Inspection
2026-08-11
Tight tolerances should be assigned only where function requires them. Every critical characteristic should have a datum, limit, inspection method and acceptance stage.

Common Controls
| Feature | Typical control question |
|---|---|
| Bore and OD | Fit, roundness, concentricity and measurement temperature |
| Faces | Thickness, flatness, parallelism and datum |
| Threads | Standard, class, gauge and surface condition |
| Surface finish | Parameter, cutoff, direction and applicable surfaces |
| Edges | Chamfer, radius, break-edge limit and burr acceptance |
First Article and Production Inspection
For new or revised components, define whether a first-article report is required before production. Production sampling should identify characteristics, frequency, equipment and records.
Final Condition
Cleaning, blasting, pickling, passivation, coating or other processing can affect dimensions and surface appearance. Inspection timing must match the final accepted condition.
