ASTM B863 titanium wire coils and spools

An ASTM B863 titanium wire RFQ should state grade, condition, diameter, tolerance, coil/spool form, unit weight, surface, cast/helix, testing and traceability. Welding filler wire follows its applicable AWS or ISO classification and must not be assumed from a B863 base-material wire order.

ASTM B863 Grade Matrix

Grade familySelection focusCritical review
Grades 1–4Commercially pure titanium with grade-specific strength and ductilityForming, service, diameter and condition
Grades 5–6Alloy wire for specified strength and temperature requirementsFabrication, condition and governing design
Grades 7 and 12Different corrosion-selected alloy familiesExact environment and specification availability
Grade 23Extra-low-interstitial Ti-6Al-4VCritical application specification, certification and controls

Diameter, Condition and Mechanical Requirements

State nominal diameter and tolerance, cold-worked or annealed condition as permitted, tensile requirements and any straightness requirement for cut lengths. Grade alone does not define the wire’s forming, spring, heading or machining behavior.

Coil, Spool and Straight-Length Supply

Define package form, coil ID/OD, spool dimensions, minimum and maximum unit weight, winding and maximum number of pieces. For feeding, specify cast, helix, layer winding and permissible set where relevant. For cut wire, state length tolerance, straightness and end condition.

Surface, Inspection and Traceability

Define finish, cleanliness, permitted seams or marks, and protective packaging. Require chemistry, tensile tests, dimensions, surface inspection, MTC and heat/lot identity. Add application-specific tests only with acceptance criteria.

FAQ

Is ASTM B863 wire automatically welding wire?

No. Welding filler wire requires the correct filler-metal classification and qualified procedure.

Why specify package geometry?

It determines whether the wire can be handled and fed by the customer’s equipment.

Can grade be verified visually?

No. Use marking, traceability, certificates and required verification.
