Titanium Square Bar Dimensions, Tolerance and Bulk RFQ Guide

A titanium square bar quotation requires more than a grade and nominal side size. Buyers should define the governing material specification, side dimension, corner geometry, length, straightness, twist, surface, condition, quantity, inspection and documentation. These details determine whether rolled, forged or machined square stock is practical and how much machining allowance is required.
Titanium Square Bar or Square Tube?
Square bar is solid four-sided stock. Square tube is hollow and must also be defined by wall thickness and inside or outside corner geometry. They serve different structural and machining functions and should not share one purchase description. For a solid component, square bar may reduce removal compared with round bar when the finished part retains four flats.
Dimensions Required for a Reliable RFQ
| RFQ item | What to state | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Side size | Nominal width × height and permissible variation | Confirms true square stock and controls finished allowance |
| Corner geometry | Sharp, radiused or machining-allowance corners | Affects the available production route and usable envelope |
| Length | Mill length, exact cut length or cut schedule | Controls yield, end finishing, packing and freight |
| Form tolerance | Straightness, twist, diagonals and squareness | Determines fit-up and downstream machining datum |
| Surface | Descaled, pickled, ground or machined | Changes stock allowance, inspection and processing cost |
Grade and Standard Selection
State the exact titanium grade, UNS designation and specification revision. ASTM B348/B348M may be specified for applicable titanium bar and billet orders, but the buyer must confirm product-shape coverage and add drawing-specific dimensions and tolerances. Grade 2 is commonly considered where commercially pure titanium corrosion resistance and fabrication behavior govern. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V is considered where substantially higher strength is required. Neither is an automatic substitute for the other.
Production Route and Inspection
Rolled, forged and machined-from-round square stock can differ in corner shape, grain orientation, surface condition, minimum quantity and dimensional capability. The quotation should identify the accepted route. Inspection may include side dimensions, diagonal comparison, corner radii, twist, straightness, cut length, surface condition, chemistry and mechanical certificates, and heat or lot traceability. Add ultrasonic or penetrant examination only with an agreed method and acceptance criteria.

FAQ
How is titanium square bar measured?
State both side dimensions, even when they are equal, together with the permitted variation. Add diagonals, squareness, corner radius, twist and straightness when they affect the finished part.
Can round bar be machined into square bar?
It can be an alternative production route, but it may create more material removal and different economics. The finished envelope, grade, quantity, tolerance and grain-orientation requirements must be reviewed before acceptance.
Is Grade 2 cheaper than Grade 5 square bar?
Price depends on dimensions, route, quantity and current material availability as well as grade. Grade 2 must not replace Grade 5 where higher strength or an approved material qualification controls the design.
What is the MOQ?
There is no universal MOQ. It depends on grade, side size, length, tolerance, route, stock availability and whether compatible sizes can be combined into a production or purchasing lot.
