How to Specify Titanium Hollow Bar for Bushings, Sleeves and Machined Parts

Titanium hollow bar can reduce material removal when the finished component has a large central bore, but it must be ordered by outside diameter, inside diameter, wall, length and machining allowance. A nominal pipe size or finished bushing size alone is not a complete hollow-bar definition.

When Is Hollow Bar Useful?

Hollow bar is evaluated for bushings, sleeves, bearing housings, valve parts, annular spacers and other turned components. Compared with solid titanium round bar, a suitable hollow starting form can shorten boring time and reduce chips. The decision depends on finished geometry, quantity, available dimensions, grain-flow requirements, certification and total manufacturing cost.

Dimensions Buyers Must State

ItemRequired definitionWhy it matters
Outside diameterNominal and toleranceControls external machining stock
Inside diameterNominal, tolerance and concentricity basisControls boring stock and minimum wall
LengthCut length and end allowanceSupports facing and workholding
WallMinimum or nominal wall and eccentricityProtects the finished envelope

Grade, Condition and Route

Specify titanium grade, governing material requirement and condition. Hollow material may be produced through piercing, extrusion, forging, boring or other approved routes. If the route matters to fatigue, grain flow, NDT or qualification, state it explicitly rather than assuming it from appearance.

Machining Allowance and Inspection

Provide the finished drawing, machining datums, minimum stock and any critical concentricity or straightness requirement. Inspection may include chemistry and mechanical certification, OD, ID, wall mapping, straightness, visual condition, UT or PT when agreed, and heat or lot traceability.

FAQ

Is hollow bar the same as pipe?

No. Their purchasing intent, dimensional control, product specification and testing may differ. State the required product form and machining use.

Can hollow bar be supplied rough-machined?

Yes, when the drawing, datums, machining allowance, tolerance and inspection plan are agreed.
