2024-08-30

Titanium rod and bar are used as machining stock, structural stock and feed material for forged or fabricated components. The useful application is determined by grade, shape, diameter or section, supplied condition, tolerances, inspection and the governing component design—not by the word “rod” alone.

Common Application Groups

Decision pointWhat to specify or verify
Chemical and marine equipmentShafts, pins, valve parts, fasteners and machined components where the selected grade suits the environment
Aerospace and high-performance engineeringMachined or forged parts requiring controlled material specification, traceability and inspection
Medical manufacturingFeedstock for regulated devices only when the required medical material standard, processing and quality system are specified
Industrial machiningBushings, connectors, fixtures and drawing-specific components
Consumer and sporting productsSelected lightweight, corrosion-resistant hardware and precision parts

Round Bar, Rod and Other Shapes

Terminology varies by supplier and standard. Round bar is common, while hexagonal, square and flat sections may reduce machining for certain parts. A purchasing specification should define the actual cross-section and tolerance rather than relying on an informal distinction between “bar” and “rod.”

What to Put on the RFQ

  • Grade, UNS designation and material standard
  • Round, hex, square or flat shape
  • Diameter or section size, tolerance and straightness
  • Length, cut condition, surface and supplied condition
  • Ultrasonic, surface, dimensional or other inspection when required
  • Quantity, MTR, traceability and destination

Claims that one consumer industry is the largest user of thin titanium rods are not a reliable selection basis. Start from the component drawing, loads, environment, manufacturing route and applicable approval requirements.

Review the Titanium Bar category and ASTM B348 Titanium Bar, then send the drawing or RFQ.
