Titanium Plate for Chemical Processing Equipment: Selection Guide
Titanium plate is selected for chemical-processing equipment only when the alloy grade, fabrication route and equipment design suit the complete process environment. Review concentration, temperature, aeration, impurities, crevices, deposits, cleaning and upset conditions before approving Grade 2, Grade 7, Grade 12 or another material.

Grade Selection Follows the Environment
Grade 2 is a common industrial starting point for many oxidizing and chloride-bearing conditions. Grade 7 may be evaluated for selected reducing-acid or crevice conditions, while Grade 12 offers a different balance of corrosion and strength. No grade is universally best. Use corrosion data and qualified engineering for the exact process.
Normal Operation Is Not the Whole Exposure
Provide start-up, shutdown, cleaning, steaming, flushing and upset conditions, plus contaminants and solids. Local concentration under deposits, poor drainage and crevices can control performance even when bulk chemistry appears acceptable.
Fabrication and Contamination Control
State forming direction and bend limits, welding qualifications, shielding and discoloration acceptance, clean tooling, iron-contamination control and surface preparation. Material quality cannot correct an unsuitable joint, inaccessible crevice or contaminated weld.
Pressure Equipment and Documentation
Where a pressure code applies, identify design code, material acceptance, welding, NDE, pressure testing and data-book requirements. ASTM B265 material certification alone does not certify the fabricated vessel or component. Maintain heat/lot and weld traceability through cutting and assembly.
Inspection and System Interfaces
Define dimensions, surface, PMI where required, UT or penetrant examination, weld inspection and third-party hold points. Review gaskets, bolting, dissimilar-metal attachments, supports, thermal movement and maintenance access.

Is Grade 2 suitable for every chemical tank?
No. Suitability depends on the actual chemicals, concentration, temperature, contaminants, crevices and design.
Does thicker plate improve corrosion resistance?
Not by itself. Alloy/environment compatibility and equipment design remain fundamental.
Does an ASTM B265 certificate certify a pressure vessel?
No. It certifies the plate to the order; fabrication and vessel acceptance follow the applicable code and quality plan.
