How to Specify Titanium Dowel Pins

A titanium dowel pin order should state grade, nominal diameter, tolerance or fit, length, end form, surface finish, straightness and inspection. A standard number alone may define steel material, so titanium must be stated separately.
Diameter and Fit
The assembly designer chooses a clearance, transition or interference fit from the mating-hole tolerance, alignment requirement, installation method, temperature and removability. State the actual pin and hole limits rather than using “press fit” without numbers.
End Styles
| Feature | Purpose | RFQ data |
|---|---|---|
| Chamfer | Lead-in for assembly | Angle, length and usable cylindrical length |
| Rounded end | Guided insertion or drawing-specific contact | Radius and datum |
| Internal thread | Extraction of a pull dowel | Thread, depth, entrance and gauging |
Surface and Inspection
Define ground, turned or finish-machined surface and any roughness limit. Inspection can include diameter mapping, roundness, straightness, length, end geometry, internal-thread gaging, MTC and lot traceability.

FAQ
Is ISO 8734 sufficient for a titanium dowel?
No. Confirm titanium grade, condition, deviations from standard material requirements, surface and testing.
Should the pin or hole be measured?
Critical assemblies normally control both mating limits according to the drawing and inspection plan.
