How to Specify Titanium Coil: Width, ID, OD and Coil Weight

A titanium coil inquiry should define thickness, width, inside diameter, outside diameter or maximum coil size, unit weight, edge condition, surface and tolerance. Grade and thickness alone do not describe how the coil will run through slitting, forming or stamping equipment.

Coil Geometry

ParameterBuyer definitionProcessing effect
ThicknessNominal and toleranceControls forming, stiffness and finished part
WidthMill or slit width and toleranceControls tool fit and edge trim
Inside diameterCoil ID and core requirementMust fit payoff equipment
Outside diameterMaximum OD where restrictedControls handling and equipment clearance
Coil weightTarget or maximum unit weightControls lifting, line capacity and splice frequency

Edge and Surface

State mill edge, slit edge, deburred edge or another approved condition. Define pickled, descaled, bright, cleaned or order-specific surface and identify which side is critical. If scratches, pits, waviness or oil are restricted, use measurable acceptance criteria or approved samples.

Flatness, Camber and Coil Set

Precision strip applications may require tighter camber, flatness, crown or coil-set control than a general material specification provides. Tell the supplier how the strip will be fed and formed, and state inspection length and measurement method.

RFQ Checklist

  • Grade, specification and revision
  • Thickness and width with tolerances
  • Coil ID, maximum OD and unit weight
  • Edge, surface and critical side
  • Camber, flatness or coil-set requirement
  • Quantity, inspection, MTC and packing orientation

FAQ

Is maximum coil weight enough without ID?

No. ID and allowable OD must also match the payoff, mandrel, lifting and storage equipment.

Are titanium coil finishes the same as stainless-steel numbered finishes?

No. State the actual titanium surface condition and measurable acceptance criteria instead of assuming stainless-steel finish terminology applies.
