Titanium Special Flanges: Orifice, Long Weld Neck and Reducing

2026-08-11

Orifice, long weld neck and reducing flanges serve different piping functions. They should not be selected only from outside diameter or pressure class.

Material and Dimensions Are Separate

ASTM B381 may govern titanium forging material. ASME B16.36, ASME B16.5 or an approved drawing may control particular dimensions. The purchase order must identify each applicable document and revision.

Direct Answer: Which Titanium Special Flange Should Be Selected?

Select an orifice flange for a differential-pressure measurement assembly, a long weld-neck flange for an extended vessel or nozzle connection, and a reducing flange where a larger flange pattern must connect to a smaller bore or pipe size. These forms have different functions and cannot be selected from pressure class alone.

Flange formPrimary functionCritical RFQ data
Orifice flangeSupports orifice plate and pressure tapsTap type/orientation, plate, meter run, jack screws and paired identification

Common Specification Requirements

State titanium grade and forging specification, dimensional standard or approved drawing, pressure class, facing and finish, bore, bolt drilling, quantity, service, inspection and documentation. ASTM B381 or ASME SB381 may govern the titanium forging when invoked; the applicable flange dimensions, pressure design and project requirements must be stated separately.

Do not convert one special form into another by machining alone without design approval. Pressure taps, long-neck load transfer and reduced-bore transitions are functional geometry. Coordinate connected pipe, vessel nozzle, gaskets, bolting, weld procedure and corrosion environment.

FAQ

Is an orifice flange a normal flange with tapped holes?

No. It is a coordinated metering assembly with controlled pressure taps, plate, orientation and associated instrumentation details.

Can a standard weld-neck flange replace a long weld neck?

Not automatically. Neck length, wall profile, nozzle reinforcement, weld and NDE requirements differ.

What should an RFQ include?

Provide form, grade, standards, class, sizes, facing, drawing, service, quantity, NDE and certificates.
