How to Specify ASTM B265 Titanium Plate and Sheet

ASTM B265 is a material and product specification for titanium and titanium-alloy strip, sheet and plate; citing it alone does not define a complete purchasable item. The RFQ must identify grade, product form, condition, dimensions, tolerances, surface, processing and project-specific inspection.

Standard Requirements vs Purchase-Order Requirements

The standard establishes baseline requirements within its scope. The purchase order selects the grade, form, condition, size and permitted options and adds project requirements. Do not assume that ultrasonic testing, PMI, special flatness, protective film or third-party inspection is included unless required by the standard or stated in the order.

Grade, Form and Condition Must Agree

A Grade 2 plate certificate cannot prove that Grade 5 sheet or another form meets its purchase requirements. Verify product designation, form, condition and specification on the MTC and marking. Critical aerospace, medical or pressure-equipment work may invoke additional specifications or design-code requirements.

Dimensions, Surface and Processing

State nominal dimensions and tolerances, flatness, edge condition, surface finish and allowed imperfections. For machining, add cleanup allowance; for forming, identify grain direction, bend requirements and protected surfaces; for cut blanks, define datum, squareness, corner condition and cutting method where relevant.

Inspection and Documentation

Define chemistry and tensile certification, measurement and sampling, surface inspection, heat/lot traceability and certificate format. Add PMI, ultrasonic examination, dimensional reports or third-party witness only when required by the service, design code or quality plan, with acceptance criteria stated.
