Titanium Threaded Coupling vs Union vs Pipe Nipple

2026-08-10

Titanium threaded couplings, unions and pipe nipples may use the same thread family, but they perform different functions in a piping assembly. Selecting by size alone can create a joint that cannot be maintained, has the wrong flow path or lacks a complete pressure-design basis.

Titanium threaded coupling union and pipe nipple product forms

What Is the Difference?

ProductPrimary functionTypical connectionMaintenance consideration
Threaded couplingJoins two externally threaded pipe ends in a straight lineFemale thread at both endsUsually requires rotation or disassembly of adjacent piping
Threaded unionJoins two pipe ends with a separable three-piece connectionThreaded ends with a central union jointAllows disconnection without rotating long pipe sections
Pipe nippleProvides a short externally threaded pipe section between fittings or equipmentMale thread at both ends unless otherwise specifiedLength, wall and engagement affect the assembled geometry

Use the Correct Titanium Fitting Standard

ASME B16.52-2024 specifically covers covered titanium and titanium-alloy forged fittings with socket-welding and threaded ends, including ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking and material requirements. Thread form and gaging must also be stated; ASME B1.20.1 covers common inch pipe-thread families such as NPT and NPSC. A trade description such as “titanium coupling” does not by itself establish compliance.

Selection Guide

Choose a Coupling for a Permanent Straight Connection

A titanium threaded coupling is suited to a compact straight joint where routine separation is not required. Define full or reducing bore, thread at each end, engagement, grade and pressure-design requirements.

Choose a Union Where Disassembly Is Required

A titanium threaded union provides a separable joint for maintenance or equipment removal. The purchaser must define the sealing arrangement, orientation, compatible mating components and permitted assembly procedure.

Choose a Nipple to Control Spacing and Threaded Reach

A titanium pipe nipple connects two female-threaded ports and establishes assembly length. State outside diameter or NPS, wall, overall length, thread length, end form and traceable source-material specification.
