Before measuring: identify the tube and the requirement
Match the bundle and heat or lot identification to the purchase order and material documents. Confirm the ordered grade, product specification and edition, tube construction, nominal outside diameter (OD), wall thickness, length and the sampling plan. Note package damage before handling the tubes.
Check diameter and out-of-roundness
Use a calibrated instrument appropriate to the diameter, wall and required precision. At a selected cross-section, take outside-diameter readings in different directions without deforming thin-wall tube. Record the largest and smallest readings and their positions. Their difference describes the observed out-of-roundness at that section; use the definition and locations required by the governing specification when deciding acceptance.
Check wall thickness
Accessible tube ends
Where the tube end is accessible, use a suitable calibrated tube micrometer or other approved instrument and sample locations around the circumference as required.
Ultrasonic measurement
Where an ultrasonic method is specified, select an appropriate probe and calibration for the material, curvature and wall range. Record the method, locations and readings; do not infer minimum wall from one measurement.
Compare results and resolve discrepancies
Compare each result with the purchase order, drawing and applicable product specification. If a reading is outside the agreed limits, identify and segregate the affected material under the receiving procedure and resolve it before use.
A dimensional check alone does not establish pressure suitability or replace required material and nondestructive tests.
Keep the inspection record useful
- Tube size, grade, standard and lot identification.
- Instrument identification, calibration status and inspection date.
- Sample quantity, positions, measured values and units.
- Applicable acceptance limits, result and any disposition.
Share the grade, specification, OD, wall, length, quantity and inspection requirements for review.
