What are the properties of Titanium Gr2 Flanges?

2024-08-30

Titanium Grade 2 flanges are commercially pure titanium pressure-connection components selected primarily for corrosion resistance, moderate strength and weldability. The material grade, flange construction, dimensions, pressure-temperature rating and inspection basis must all be specified; “Grade 2” alone is not a complete purchase description.

Grade 2 Flange Properties at a Glance

PropertyEngineering relevance
UNS R50400Identifies commercially pure Titanium Grade 2 chemistry
Corrosion resistanceUseful in many oxidizing, chloride-bearing and seawater services, subject to actual chemistry and temperature
Ductility and weldabilitySupports forming and qualified inert-gas-shielded fabrication
Moderate strengthRequires design against the applicable allowable stress and service code

Which Standards Apply?

For forged titanium flanges, ASTM B381 is a relevant material specification and identifies Grade F-2 for UNS R50400. Flange dimensions and ratings may be specified to an applicable standard such as ASME B16.5 when the design and material coverage permit it. Nickel-alloy fitting specifications must not be substituted for the titanium Grade 2 flange material specification. Always state the required edition and project code.

Information Required for a Quote

  • Grade and material specification
  • Flange type, nominal size, class or design pressure and facing
  • Dimensional standard or controlled drawing
  • Bore, wall or mating pipe schedule where relevant
  • Quantity, inspection, testing, marking and certification

FAQ

Does corrosion resistance determine the pressure rating?

No. Corrosion behaviour and pressure-temperature capacity are separate checks. Rating depends on flange design, material allowable stress, temperature, dimensions, bolting, gasket and governing code.

Can Grade 2 titanium be connected directly to another metal?

It may be possible, but galvanic compatibility, isolation, crevice geometry, gasket selection and the service electrolyte require engineering review.
