Titanium Grade 5 Wire: A Corrosion-Resistant Solution for Challenging Environments.

2024-08-30

Grade 5 titanium wire is Ti-6Al-4V wire (UNS R56400), selected for high strength-to-weight ratio and useful corrosion resistance where its grade, condition and wire specification suit the application. It is not immune to every acid, alkali or high-temperature environment, and material strength alone does not establish suitability for a pressure-containing part.

Where Grade 5 Wire Fits

QuestionEngineering answer
Machined or formed wire partsDefine diameter, condition, surface, bend or forming demand and finished-part loads
Aerospace or critical componentsInvoke the required aerospace specification, approved source, testing and traceability
Chemical or marine exposureCheck exact chemistry, concentration, temperature, crevices, galvanic contact and stress
Welding fillerUse the specified filler classification and qualified welding procedure; generic Grade 5 wire is not automatically certified filler
Medical manufacturingUse the required medical material standard and regulated route rather than a generic commercial wire certificate

Specification Controls

ASTM B863 is commonly used for titanium and titanium alloy wire. The applicable chemistry and mechanical requirements depend on grade, diameter and condition under the invoked edition. Do not reuse a truncated or unlabeled property table as acceptance criteria; verify the material test report against the purchase specification.

RFQ Checklist

  • Grade 5 / UNS R56400 and exact standard
  • Diameter, tolerance and supplied condition
  • Coil, spool or straight length; coil dimensions and weight
  • Surface, cleanliness, allowable welds and packaging
  • Mechanical testing, MTR, traceability and supplementary inspection
  • Application, quantity and destination

FAQ

Is Grade 5 wire the same as Grade 7 wire?

No. Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V; Grade 7 is palladium-alloyed commercially pure titanium with a different corrosion and strength profile.

Can Grade 5 wire be used at any high temperature?

No. Time at temperature, oxidation, creep or strength reduction and the governing design allowable must be evaluated.
