How to Specify Titanium Spring Pins

A usable titanium spring-pin specification defines the pin and mating hole as one functional system. Nominal diameter and length alone cannot establish insertion force, retention or load capacity.
Required Dimensional Data
- Slotted or other approved spring-pin form
- Nominal and free outside diameter
- Length, wall or section and longitudinal slot
- End chamfer and straightness
- Mating-hole diameter, tolerance, finish and edge preparation
Material and Functional Review
State titanium grade and condition, service temperature, corrosion exposure, insertion method, required retention, shear or cyclic load, permitted permanent set and removal practice. ISO 8752 or DIN 1481 can be dimensional starting points only when expressly invoked; their steel spring assumptions do not automatically apply to titanium.
Inspection and Qualification
Dimensional inspection may be combined with sample-hole fit, insertion and retention force, agreed shear testing and lot traceability. Qualification should reproduce the actual mating material and hole preparation.

Can titanium directly replace a steel roll pin?
Not without engineering validation because stiffness, springback, strength and wear behavior differ.

For many joints, sample insertion and retention testing in the actual hole material provides essential evidence, supplemented by load testing where required.
