Mechanical Property Reference
Commercially pure Grade 2 titanium material is commonly specified with a minimum tensile strength near 345 MPa, minimum 0.2% yield strength near 275 MPa and minimum elongation near 20%, depending on product form, thickness and governing specification. These figures are material references, not automatic finished-fastener ratings.
Finished bolt and nut performance depends on the selected ASTM fastener specification, diameter, thread geometry, manufacturing route and test requirements. Design allowables, proof or tensile load, shear capacity, fatigue and installation preload must be established for the actual joint.
Why Specify Grade 2 Titanium Fasteners?
- Corrosion resistance: a stable passive oxide film supports service in many aerated seawater, chloride and industrial environments.
- Low weight: density is approximately 4.51 g/cm³, reducing fastener mass compared with many steel and nickel-alloy options.

Grade 2 is not a lower-quality version of Grade 5; it serves a different engineering purpose. Likewise, Grade 5 is not automatically the better choice simply because it is stronger.
Standards and Ordering Requirements
ASTM F468/F468M covers applicable commercial wrought nonferrous bolts, cap screws and studs for general use. ASTM F467/F467M addresses applicable nonferrous nuts. ISO, DIN, ASME or customer drawings may control dimensions. Confirm the current edition and whether inch-pound or metric requirements apply.
A complete order should define the Grade 2 designation, fastener and dimensional standard, diameter, pitch, length, thread tolerance, head style, mechanical requirements, finish, tests, marking and certification. Pressure, offshore or safety-critical assemblies may require additional project specifications.

Grade 2 titanium is not universally resistant to every chemical. Hydrofluoric acid, dry chlorine and reducing or oxygen-depleted crevice conditions require specific engineering review. Temperature, concentration, aeration and contamination can materially change corrosion performance.
Galvanic Corrosion and Joint Design
Titanium is relatively noble in seawater. When connected electrically to a less noble metal, the mating metal may corrode faster. Designers should review material compatibility, cathode-to-anode area ratio, coatings, sealing and the possible use of nonconductive sleeves or washers.
Fastener material should be selected as part of the complete assembly rather than in isolation. The required clamp load, joint stiffness, thermal movement and access for inspection or replacement should also be considered.
Installation and Galling Control
Titanium threads can gall during tightening. Use clean, undamaged and correctly gauged threads, maintain alignment and tighten at a controlled speed. Where permitted, apply a project-approved lubricant or anti-seize compound consistently.
