Grade 5 Titanium Flat Washers and Lock Washers
Grade 5 titanium flat washers and lock washers are Ti-6Al-4V fastening components used to distribute bearing load, protect joint surfaces or support a specified locking arrangement. Washer geometry, hardness, surface condition and compatibility with the bolt, nut and joint material must be defined by the purchase specification; the titanium grade alone does not establish finished-washer performance.

Flat Washer and Lock Washer Functions
A flat washer provides a controlled bearing surface beneath a bolt head or nut and can reduce local surface damage or embedment. It does not by itself prevent loosening. A split spring lock washer introduces spring action and edge contact, but its effectiveness depends on joint design, preload, surface hardness and service vibration. Critical joints may require a validated prevailing-torque nut, locking feature, thread-locking system or other engineered method.
Material and Compatibility
Grade 5 titanium combines low density, corrosion resistance and higher strength than commercially pure titanium. The mating bolt, nut and washer should be reviewed as one assembly. Titanium threads and bearing surfaces can gall, while contact with dissimilar metals in conductive environments can create galvanic concerns. Lubrication, isolation, surface treatment and tightening procedures must be selected for the actual service conditions.
Applications and Selection Limits
Grade 5 titanium washers may be evaluated for aerospace fixtures, marine hardware, chemical equipment, robotics, motorsport, high-performance bicycles and precision industrial assemblies. They should not be selected from material grade alone. Designers must confirm bearing stress, joint preload, fatigue, temperature, electrical isolation, vibration and compatibility with the mating components.
- Use a plain washer where load distribution and surface protection are required.
- Define the complete locking strategy for dynamic or vibration-sensitive service.
- Do not mix metric and inch dimensional references in one order.
- Confirm washer hardness and geometry with the mating fastener specification.
Inspection, Packaging and RFQ Information
Inspection can include material certificate review, inside and outside diameter measurement, thickness, flatness, profile, burr and surface examination, plus heat/lot traceability when required. Washers are separated and protected to reduce surface damage during international transport.
For an accurate quotation, provide the washer type, applicable standard or drawing, Grade 5 material requirement, nominal fastener size, dimensions, quantity, finish, mating fastener information, inspection plan, marking and packaging requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are DIN 125 and ISO 7089 washers identical?
They are commonly cross-referenced for similar plain-washer applications, but the order should identify the required standard and edition. Dimensions, tolerances and product grades should be checked rather than assumed interchangeable.
Will a split lock washer prevent loosening?
Not in every joint. Performance depends on preload, mating surfaces, vibration and installation. Safety-critical joints need a validated locking method selected by the responsible engineer.
Can special titanium washers be supplied from drawings?
Non-standard outside diameters, thicknesses, tabs, slots and profiles can be reviewed against the drawing, quantity, tolerances and inspection requirements.
