Product Detail
Product Introduction
ASTM B338 Titanium Tube is purchased by an exact tube or pipe specification and project datasheet. Tube and pipe are not interchangeable descriptions: the RFQ must state the product form, grade, dimensions, manufacturing route, condition, service and acceptance tests.
When should ASTM B338 titanium tube be specified?
Selection answer: Use ASTM B338/B338M when the required product is seamless or welded titanium tube for a surface condenser, evaporator or heat exchanger. State the exact grade, manufacturing route, outside diameter, wall, length, condition and edition of the standard.
Selection boundary: Do not use ASTM B338 as a generic description for process pipe. ASTM B861 governs seamless pipe and ASTM B862 governs welded pipe; their dimensions, manufacturing routes and test obligations are different.
RFQ data to confirm: For quotation review, provide service fluid, temperature, pressure, grade, seamless or welded route, OD, wall, length, tube-end requirements, tubesheet or joining method, nondestructive examination, pressure test and certificate package.
Product Specifications
| Product | ASTM B338 Titanium Tube | Grade | Titanium Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 7, Grade 9, Grade 12 or specified alloy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | ASTM B338 / ASME SB338 as ordered applies only where its scope covers the ordered form. B338 is a condenser and heat-exchanger tube specification; B861 covers seamless pipe; B862 covers welded pipe. Do not substitute one solely because the alloy grade is the same. | Size & Form | Order-defined OD or NPS, wall/schedule, straight length, U-bend geometry or coil dimensions |
| Tolerance | Applicable standard plus order-defined diameter, wall, length, straightness, end, bend or coil tolerances | Supply Condition | Seamless, welded, cold worked, annealed, straight length, U-bent or coiled as expressly ordered |
| Inspection | Material-certificate and heat-identity review, chemistry and mechanical properties, OD or NPS, wall and length, surface and ends, straightness or coil/bend geometry, plus pressure, eddy-current, ultrasonic or supplementary testing when ordered. | Documents | MTC, heat/lot traceability and agreed inspection reports |
Additional Supply & Ordering Details
Useful, technically consistent information consolidated from earlier product pages.
| Standard and end-use boundary | ASTM B338/B338M covers seamless and welded titanium tubes intended for surface condensers, evaporators and heat exchangers. It is not a generic substitute for ASTM B861 seamless pipe or ASTM B862 welded pipe. |
|---|---|
| Tube geometry to specify | State outside diameter, wall thickness, straight length, seamless or welded route, grade, condition, end finish, straightness and dimensional tolerances. Tube gauge or nominal size alone is insufficient. |
| Heat-transfer quality controls | Define eddy-current or other nondestructive examination, hydrostatic or pneumatic test when required, surface cleanliness, tube-end condition and any tighter OD/wall tolerance needed for tubesheet fit and expansion. |
| Equipment data for review | Provide service fluid, temperature, pressure, chloride and contaminant data, tubesheet material, joining or expansion method, cleaning regime and required documentation so grade and supply route can be reviewed. |

FAQ
Is titanium tube the same as titanium pipe?
No. Tube is generally ordered by OD and wall for heat-transfer or precision service; pipe is generally ordered by pipe size and wall/schedule. The governing specification and dimensions must be stated.
Can seamless and welded material be substituted?
Only with purchaser approval after confirming the governing standard, size range, service, design code, fabrication route and required inspection.
What information is needed for quotation?
Provide grade, standard/revision, dimensions, quantity, route, condition, ends, service, tests, cleanliness and document requirements.
