Grade 5 Titanium Flange Nuts

Grade 5 titanium flange nuts are Ti-6Al-4V hex nuts with an integral flange that provides a wider bearing surface. Plain and serrated flange configurations can be reviewed, but nut geometry, thread, mating fastener, bearing surface, locking method and installation procedure must be specified as one joint system.

Plain or Serrated Flange?

A plain flange distributes bearing load over a wider area and may reduce local surface pressure. It does not automatically eliminate the need for a washer; hole size, joint material, electrical isolation and the governing design determine the complete bearing arrangement.

Serrations can increase resistance to rotation by engaging the mating surface, but they may damage coatings, raise removal torque and be unsuitable for soft or finished surfaces. Serration direction, geometry, prevailing torque and reuse policy should be defined rather than assumed.

Material and Standard Considerations

Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V offers higher strength than commercially pure titanium and may be evaluated for marine, offshore, aerospace, motorsport and industrial assemblies. Applicable ASTM F467/F467M requirements may be invoked where the alloy, size and product scope match. A dimensional reference developed for steel or stainless steel can only serve as agreed geometry; titanium material and performance requirements must be separately stated.

For custom products, the drawing should define across-flats, height, flange diameter, flange thickness, bearing face, serration details, thread relief, chamfers and tolerances. The mating bolt or stud specification must be supplied so thread stripping and proof-load relationships can be reviewed.

Marine and Chemical Applications

Grade 5 titanium flange nuts may be considered for pipe supports, brackets, deck equipment, chemical-equipment covers, lightweight fixtures and corrosion-resistant machinery. The service review should identify seawater or chemical composition, concentration, temperature, contaminants, wet/dry cycling and mating materials.

Titanium is relatively noble in seawater. When connected to carbon steel, aluminum or another dissimilar metal, exposed-area ratios and electrolyte contact can drive galvanic corrosion of the less noble component. Isolation washers, sleeves, coatings, drainage and inspection access may be required.

Galling and Installation Control

Titanium internal and external threads can gall. Use clean, undamaged threads, controlled installation speed and a qualified lubricant or coating where approved. Lubrication changes the torque–tension relationship, so a dry torque value must not be reused after adding lubricant. Critical joints require validated assembly procedures and defined replacement or reuse criteria.

A serrated flange does not compensate for inadequate preload or an unsuitable joint. Locking performance should be validated for vibration, temperature, bearing material and maintenance conditions.

Inspection and Traceability

Available inspection options can include chemical certificate review, dimensional measurement, internal-thread gauging, visual examination, flange runout or flatness checks, surface-condition verification and mechanical tests required by the purchase specification. Agree heat/lot traceability, sampling and report format before production.

Does a flange nut replace a flat washer?

Not automatically. Bearing stress, hole size, surface protection and electrical isolation determine whether a washer remains necessary.
